Reporting something that looks wrong

The most useful bug report about this app is a figure that does not add up, because that is the one kind of failure the whole design is meant to make impossible. If a number looks wrong, please include:

  • What the dial said, and what the burned and eaten figures under it said at the same moment.
  • What How this adds up showed — the sheet behind the ? next to a figure. It contains the whole arithmetic.
  • Whether Health was connected, and roughly what time of day it was.
  • Your iOS version and device.

A screenshot of the home screen and of that sheet is usually enough on its own. Please don’t send your export unless it is asked for — it is your whole diary, and it is rarely needed to find a bug.

Questions that come up

Is there an account? Can I log in on another phone?

There is no account, on purpose. Your data lives on your phone and travels with your device backup. Sync across two devices is not built yet; when it is, it will use your own iCloud rather than a server belonging to us. More on why.

Does it work without a network?

Logging does, always. The food list, the by-hand form, repeating something you logged before, saved entries, the widgets, the statistics and the export all run on the phone with nothing signed in.

Three things need one, and each says so when it cannot get it: an estimate, the companion, and scanning a barcode — that last one is free, and it asks a public database rather than a model. A failed scan tells you the database could not be reached and leaves the list and the form where they were.

Why is my burn figure marked “estimated”?

Because part of it is. Resting energy is modelled from your profile, everyday movement is paced from Health when there is Health data and modelled from your stated activity level when there isn’t, and logged workouts are counted at face value. The label is there so the estimate never passes for a measurement. Tap the ? and it shows you which part is which, with today’s numbers in it.

The app suggested a portion that isn’t what I ate.

Change it — the portion is on the row and editable, and Fill in the figures is always available if you would rather give the number yourself. Numbers you type are kept exactly as written and never re-estimated.

How do I get my data out?

Profile → Your data → Export as a spreadsheet. One row per entry, as a CSV, straight to the share sheet. The origin of each figure is one of the columns.

Will there be an Android version?

Not soon, and it isn’t promised. The parts that decide what a figure means are written so they could travel, but the interface is not, and saying more than that would be guessing.

Not medical advice

Burnline estimates energy balance for general interest. It is not a medical device and does not give medical or nutritional advice. Talk to a professional before making significant changes to how you eat. If you are struggling with food or with eating, a calorie tracker is not the right tool, and stepping away from one is a reasonable thing to do.
